Height: 5’4”
Age: 44
Weight: 128
Hometown: Laytonville, California, which is a tiny backwoods town in the heart of Northern California—if you blink while driving through, you’ll miss it.
Residence: San Diego, California, the nation’s finest city.
Occupation: Personal fitness trainer and certified sports-nutrition specialist, spokesmodel for Sci-Fit Nutrition, writer, fitness model, mother and wife.
Marital status: Married to Dana Pinkerton, the yin to my yang and my knight in shining armor. I wouldn’t be following my dreams without his love and support.
Workout schedule: It’s all about maintenance, recovery and nutrition at this stage. I train shoulders and back once a week with bi’s and tri’s every other workout and legs twice a week. I respond best to dynamic, circuit-style training that involves a lot of full-body, fast-twitch stimulation, so I’m constantly moving in my workouts. My background is in traditional weightlifting, but I often throw in a day of steady, slow strength work to mix things up. One of my leg days always involves stair sprints at the beach across from my home gym, Cardiffit, in Cardiff-by-the–Sea, California. I also do four to five days of 45-minute cardio on the treadmill or Stepmill, switching between speed intervals and steady-state at every other workout, which helps keep my bodyfat at 10 to 12 percent year-round. I also do a minimum of 20 minutes of stretching every day to maintain flexibility and help with recovery, which is critical for the mature athlete.
Favorite foods: I maintain a clean diet daily: egg whites, turkey, chicken breast, oatmeal, whole grains, yams, almonds, walnuts, avocado, fresh fruit and tons of fresh veggies. I am a total foodie, however, and love to indulge in delicious dishes and desserts. My favorites are chocolate lava cake and my husband’s homemade double-baked mac and cheese. I try to keep it all in perspective and live by the rule of moderation because you truly are what you eat. I find it easier to allow a couple of small indulgences every day to avoid blowing it on a larger scale, so I keep things like squares of dark chocolate on hand for when my sweet tooth kicks in. I often enjoy a glass of red wine in the evening, as it helps me maintain vascularity, is good for the heart and blood and is a traditional part of my Italian heritage.
Factoids: I have two children, 18 and 23, who are amazing and beautiful human beings. I can’t get over how quickly time flies. I don’t feel as if I’m old enough to have two adult kids. I’ve been involved in fitness for the better part of 20 years as a trainer, nutrition specialist, competitor and model, but my first love was writing. I have a B.A. in public relations, and I spent 15 years in the white-collar world. I’m grateful for my business background, which has helped me immeasurably in my career as a fitness professional. I grew up in a very rural setting—no electricity, phone or television—and have a deep appreciation for the simple life.
Future plans: Continue to help others develop and live happy, healthy lifestyles through sensible training and nutrition by writing and having an online presence via SciFit, my Web site and other “go-to” online resources. I also envision creating a talk show like “The View” that’s based on health, fitness and nutrition issues for mainstream exposure and discussion. To pursue fitness modeling, a recent and unexpected—but very promising—career move that will help me “brand” Shelly Pinkerton and bring my message of health and fitness to people everywhere.
